So many people write in and ask a question of me, how many children died in The Industrial Schools of Ireland? that my friends is a very difficult question to answer. You see records kept by the different Religious Orders were questionable, we know that many of the records were deliberately destroyed by the Religious Orders that ran these Industrial Schools and many other record were never kept. We also know that even if a boy died in the Industrial Schools of Ireland the Religious Orders would not record the death, because they wanted to still collect any monies from the Irish State.
The Religious Orders, mostly the Christian Brothers were responsible for the boys from the moment he entered the Industrial School until the moment he died in the Industrial School or was released, upon reaching the tender age of sixteen. The Industrial School Superior was personally responsible for constant “unofficial” cruelty that often led—and was intended to lead—to beatings, rapes and even murder in the Industrial Schools in Ireland. Most of the deaths would never to reported to the local police, because, of the one simple fact, that the local police, didn’t want to know, sadly the view of the police was, it was nothing to do with them, it was an Irish Catholic Church problem. The local Police wouldn’t dare enter a Religious Institution in Ireland or even to ask a question, the Religious Order’s word would be absolute in all things pertaining to the goings on in the Industrial Schools in Ireland. If their was a question to ask, say by some family member, about a boy, say their son, or cousin, or brother, the Christian Brothers would routinely write up the death as “suicide,” or “accidental” death, or even in a few cases the boy had escaped during the night. The Superior of the Industrial School would report the murder or death, but the first report of the death of the child would be to his Superiors of his Religious Order and not to the Irish authorities. If The Superior of the Industrial School had to report the death of a child, then he, The Superior, first sought permission from his Superiors before reporting or going to the local police.
The Boy’s murder would be reported as an unfortunate death of a wild, savage boy, or the boy’s death was the result of an acute illness, such as “weak heart” or “interruption of circulation” or better still the boy fell of the wall, tree or the roof of the Industrial School, and that would be the end of the matter.
The Superior of the Industrial School would inform his Superiors immediately by telephone and then the local Bishop, who would then or might call the local Superintendent of the Police, you see they were all friends. Nothing would happen, absolutely nothing, the case of the murdered boy would immediately be buried with the boy and immediately forgotten. What many people in Ireland don’t understand about the power of the Irish Catholic Church was they were never, ever subject to review by any judicial or administrative authorities outside of the Irish Catholic Church’s apparatus. Based on an extra-legal jurisdiction authorised by Irish Catholic Church Hierarchy, the Industrial Schools of Ireland, Magdalene laundries, Mother and Baby Homes or other Religious Institutions, literally stood outside the laws of the Irish State. What happen in these Catholic Church run Institutions was a matter only for the Irish Catholic Church authorities and not the secular Irish State authorities, period. The Industrial Schools, standing outside the reach of the Irish justice authorities, had always been places where the Religious Orders could kill and did kill women and children at random, in the full acknowledgement that there would be no interference by the Irish State Authorities, or the Irish State Police and that my friends was and is a fact.
Scholars have estimated that the Irish Catholic Church regime incarcerated hundreds of thousands, of children and women in the Industrial Schools, Magdalene laundries, Mother and Baby Homes and the Mental Asylums of Ireland between 1920s and 1996. It is difficult to estimate the total number of deaths in these Institutions, because most of the paperwork was and is destroyed. But one low estimate notes a range of between 18,000 and as high as 26,000 deaths for registered children of the Convent homes in Ireland. Many Scholars now believe once the “Mother and Baby Homes Commission of Investigation” is complete, that low and high estimate will probably be double or triple that figure that Scholars have given.
For example;- One Religious Institution in County Galway has already confirm that 796 babies were in a Septic tank on the grounds of the Convent in Tuam, but the Investigators, (Mother and Baby Homes Commission of Investigation) say that, possibly 1,876 and more women and children are buried underneath the children’s playgrounds which formally belonged to the Convent, and also this one Convent, in Tuam, run by the Sisters of the Bon Secours Order of Nuns, the number of 796 babies, ditched or flushed into the septic tank, and other secret tanks, now discovered, that the Nuns pretended not to know about, or denied ever existed, like the newly discovered 17 large secret chambers of 20 chambers, also contains hundreds of bundles of babies and small children, wrapped in cloth, newspapers, or brown paper, which were stacked like slabs of bacon on long shelves in these dank, damp cellars beneath the convent grounds. It must now be obvious to all that you can't even trust the Nuns to tell the truth about the babies and where they the Nuns hide them.
Something else the lying Nuns told both the nation and the Irish Police that the babies were famine babies of 1845 era and not theirs, the Nuns claimed to know nothing about them. The Nuns also claimed that they took over the building in 1925, but Radiocarbon dating, done in 2016 and 2017, proved without a doubt that the remains of the Babies date only from the time in which the Mother and Baby Home was operated by the Sisters of the Bon Secours Order of Nuns, 1925-1961. The biggest number of the samples, date from the 1950s, according to the forensic scientists, brought into the Convent to investigate the septic tank, these same forensic scientists are the ones that by complete accident, also found other secret rooms, further into the side of the septic tank, 20 in total, secret chambers, 17 of the large chambers were from floor to ceiling stacked with bundles of babies, 50 to 100 or more in each chamber. The Bon Secours Order of Nuns, who built the septic tanks and the 20 secret chambers, which they now said were bomb shelters, offered no explanation of this new discoveries, or how the babies and children were stacked there, referred all and any questions to the local Archbishop, who when asked, only offered holy prayers to the Holy Nuns, nothing for the hundreds of bundles of babies discovered in the secret chambers beneath their Convent.
Yes the bomb shelters in County Galway? now that’s a puzzle, a hide out for the Nuns suffering from mass illusions, maybe in case the Nazis or Japanese bombed a very obscure town called Tuam in the West of Ireland? maybe Mr. Churchill and his Cabinet were going to hide out in Tuam?? in the event of a German invasion, yes that must be the answer, and maybe they brought the babies with them..So the obvious question now is who stacked the bundles of babies and children for over 40 yeas 1926 to 1965, so neatly on the wooden shelves from floor to ceiling, the chambers were approximately 10 feet tall, arched with 8 wooden shelves in each chamber, babies stacked one on top of the others, like you would stack wine or bottles on wooden shelves. The clever Nuns had them built, so they must of had a purpose, the Nuns must of known the purpose of these 20 secret chambers and what their function would be. With many babies and children and their mothers dying around them, I suggest the septic tank filled up very quickly and the Nuns came up with a plan to construct the 20 secret chambers, spine-chilling, devious. And something else that is astounding, with all the information about the babies and secret chambers and the lying Nuns, almost out in the media, no-one has been charged or questioned by the Irish Police, the Elderly Nuns, and holy Priest that worked in the Convent in Tuam, we are told by the powerful Irish Catholic Church must never be questioned.
Look at the south west corner of the site from this 1892 map at the top. You will see a “Sewage Tank” clearly marked in the south west corner of the site.
The Commission’s ;- (Mother and Baby Homes Commission of Investigation)
Statement - 3rd. March 2017
The Commission has completed its test excavation of the Tuam site.
The stratigraphic survey which was conducted in October 2015 identified a particular area of interest and identified a number of sub surface anomalies that were considered worthy of further investigation in November/December 2016 and in January/February 2017. Test trenches were dug revealing two large structures. One structure appears to be large sewage containment system or septic tank that had been decommissioned and filled with rubble and debris and then covered with top soil. The second structure is a long structure which is divided into twenty chambers. The Commission has not yet determined what the purpose of this structure was but it appears to be related to the treatment/containment of sewage an d/or waste water. The Commission has also not yet determined if it was ever used for this purpose.
In the second structure, significant quantities of human remains have been discovered in at least 17 of the 20 underground chambers which were examined. A small number of remains were recovered for the purpose of analysis. These remains involved a number of individuals with age-at-death ranges from approximately 35 foetal weeks to 2-3 years. Radiocarbon dating of the samples recovered suggest that the remains date of the samples recovered suggest that the remains date from the timeframe relevant to the operation of the Mother and Baby Home ( the Mother and Baby Home operated from 1925-1961;- a number of the samples are likely to date from the 1950s). Further scientific tests are been conducted.
The Commission is shocked by this discovery and is continuing its investigation into who was responsible for the disposal of human remains in this way. Meanwhile, The Commission has asked the relevant State authorities take responsibility for the appropriate treatment of the remains. The Coroner has been informed.
So if we add the low estimates, 796 plus 1,876 = 2,672 and now add again a low estimate of say 17 more large secret chambers of 20 chambers contains hundreds of bundles of babies and small children and maybe 50 or 100 in each chamber so again low estimates 17 chambers with 50 babies in each = 17x50=850;- so total is 2672 plus 850 =3,522 babies and children in One Religious Institution in Ireland now we know there were over 200 similar Religious Institutions in Ireland…
Let’s make no mistake, most Irish people did know about the evolving terror of Irish Catholic Church’s Run Institutions. After all, some member or members of their families were incarcerated in them, sadly many were put there by their very own families. Irish people knew Religious Institutions were full of women and children who were stigmatised as sub-human, whores and savages. They knew that these, like other groups and minorities, were being locked up and been abused out of hand. The Irish People also knew that the Irish Catholic Church had repeatedly forecast the locking up and controlling of these unwed women and their children in the many Religious Institutions, the Irish Catholic Church ran in Ireland. Irish people knew also that of the details, because they had read and gossiped about them, among themselves, or a family or friend told them about the Religious run Institutions, and the horrors and terrors within them. They also knew because the Religious Institutions and the measures they would take against unwed mothers and their children, had been prominently and proudly reported step by step in thousands of officially-inspired Irish media articles, posters and Church pulpits in every parish in Ireland. And finally every family member knew of a member of their family who was a direct victim of the terrors and horrors of the Irish Catholic Church and their Religious run Institutions.
I must destroy the claim - generally made by Irish People and accepted by most Irish historians, that they did not know about the atrocities and crimes of violence, that went on in all the Religious run Institutions, in Ireland, after all there were Religious run Institutions in all 32 Counties of Ireland and many Irish people worked in them. The Irish Catholic Church "seduced" and coerced a willing and passive Irish public. The Irish Catholic Church’s terror for decades had been carried out, not in complete secrecy, and Irish people believing that are living a lie. The Irish Catholic Church used false consent and coercion as a very useful tool to frighten a superstitious nation, to do it’s bidding. Confirmation, by The Commission of the fact that the remains of hundreds of babies were buried in a so called ‘Mother and Baby’ Home, a Convent in Tuam, Co. Galway is testament to just how sick the attitude to sexuality promulgated by the dominant Irish Catholic Church in Ireland really was.
The view of the Gardaí, Irish Police. They have set their faces against an investigation without apparently considering any of this evidence. Here are the Irish Police lying publicly;-
“The grounds in Tuam were being surveyed in 2012 and bones were found, they are historical burials going back to Famine times, there is no suggestion of any impropriety and there is no Garda investigation. Also there is no confirmation from any source that there are between 750 and 800 bodies present.”
There was a discovery of famine era bones in the vicinity in 2011 as “The Home” was a workhouse up until the turn of the century. The location of that site is about 100 yards away from the septic tank burial site. So the Gardaí are misinformed on this or have decided to find a reason not to investigate any closer. Because to claim that there is no source confirming the presence of any bodies there is to wilfully ignore myriad evidence in the public domain.
Statement from the Association of Catholic Priests (ACP) on the Tuam Babies revelations and the resignation of Marie Collins from the Vatican Commission on Clerical Sex Abuse
The latest revelations about the burial of babies in the former Mother and Baby home in Tuam, though widely predicted, provoke a sense of both sadness and shame. Sadness, that the very precious, elemental relationship between mothers and their children could be so disrespected by institutions of Church and State in Ireland; and shame because as priests we are part of an institution that has played a central role in this sorry saga.
It will be argued, with some cause, that the Catholic Church was not totally to blame, as the whole culture of Ireland during that period made it acceptable for pregnant unmarried girls to be treated so shamefully. But the Church, because of its dominant position in the Ireland of the time, must take a large degree of responsibility for what happened. Also, we must acknowledge that individual priests in parishes, through the advice they gave to parents of unmarried pregnant women, and in some cases through public condemnation from pulpits, helped to limit to Mother and Baby homes the options available to parents.
The recent Tuam revelations, coinciding with the attitudes of Vatican officials which led to the resignation of Marie Collins from the Vatican Commission on Clerical Sex Abuse, serve to underline our conviction that Catholic sexual teaching and the attitudes that can underpin it need urgent renewal. There is still a long way to go before women are treated with equal respect and dignity in the Catholic Church.
From The Bon Secours Nuns that ran the Tuam Mother and Baby Home was;-
“If you come here,” said The Bon Secours nuns “you will find no mass grave, no evidence that children were ever so buried.
From the Local Irish Police;-
‘Yeah, a few bones were found – but this was an area where famine victims were buried'. So what?” The language was clever. The Irish Police were casting their eyes to heaven. Up there, doubtless God was nodding his approval. How could anyone suggest such a thing of the poor hard working Holy Nuns? The policy, by both the Bon Secours Nuns and the Irish Police seems to have been one of plausible deniability. Throwing in a reference to the famine was using a convenient and itself emotive truth Sure, said both the Holy Nuns and the Irish Police;- “of course there’s bones down there. There’s bones all over this poor little island of Ireland”
Now we know and is confirmed by The Commission;- (Mother and Baby Homes Commission of Investigation) that the 796 Babies and children were flushed into the Septic Tank by the The Bon Secours Nuns, from the first day they took over the Mother and Baby Home, in the town of Tuam, County Galway, in Ireland. And worse still, The Commission has asked the United Nations War Graves Commission for their expertise and help with possibly finding another 1,800 plus more women and children on the same Convent grounds. That my friends sadly is one Mother and Baby Home, in Ireland, so we have over 200 more to investigate, its going to to get worse, will the Irish Catholic Church’s cover-up and lies finally catch up with them? I doubt it. But what will happen to all the children’s bodies recovered, will the Irish Catholic Church offer free mass and the utterance of a blessing, and beg for, a benediction, an absolution, a formal release from their guilt, obligations, and punishments to hide or mask away their grievous sins. I have no doubt in the eyes of the Irish Catholic Church, its the evil inherent in humanity, starting with Children and Babies corrupted with all types of sins, passed like genes through the mothers that matter, and not the Irish Catholic Church’s grave sins of murder, and mutilation of innocent Babies, Children and their unwed Mothers. Now that is sinful. Owen Felix O'Neill.
Below is another scan with notes;-
‘The first anomaly is on the left of the site, a box-like structure, which measures five metres by five metres underground.
‘To the right of the site, at the wall, there is a larger anomaly, which is an area of ground which measures 12 metres in length and three to four metres wide.
‘The results would indicate that this is not natural. It could be that something was put in the ground and covered up.
